Float Therapy

A New Level of Relaxation

Previously known as Sensory Deprivation or REST Therapy (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Technique), Float Therapy or, simply ‘floating’, is the process of lying in a salt water solution, inside a specially designed tank where both sound and light are isolated - providing a thoroughly distraction-free relaxation experience.

Due to the salt/water balance, your body rests in a perfect state of weightlessness. You are unable to tell where your body ends and the water begins. Because of the specially designed isolation tank, sound and light from the outside cannot reach you.

Float Therapy has become wildly popular over recent years, with people praising the myriad of benefits it provides. Those who experience floating describe a heightened sense of relaxation, greater mental clarity, pain relief, increased memory function, as well as alleviation of anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Persons that have any of the below conditions will not be permitted to float:

  • Have a communicable disease, including any infectious skin or respiratory disorders;

  • Have chronic heart disease, (unless medically cleared by a physician);

  • Have open wounds or recent tattoos;

  • Have incontinence;

  • Have uncontrolled epilepsy or serious mental conditions;

  • Are a high-risk pregnancy;

  • Have diabetes, (unless medically cleared by a physician);

  • Have coloured or permed their hair within 7 days;

  • Are under the influence of any drug or alcohol;

  • Suffer from any other type of ear, nose, or throat condition that would be irritated by the properties of the float tank;

  • Are under 16 without parental presence.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. These rules are in place to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all patrons and staff. If you are unsure as to whether or not you should float, please do not hesitate to ask our staff.

Can I float during pregnancy?

Yes, pregnant women may use float tanks. We always recommend you to speak with your healthcare provider prior to floating. Floating while pregnant allows you to escape the added weight of pregnancy by taking the strain off the body and spine (and feet!). It promotes excellent sleep, a lovely sense of well being, can help with all the aches and pains normally associated with pregnancy, as well as help you connect with your baby. As you progress in your pregnancy you may find that you have to adjust the way that you are floating for comfort.

Can I float when menstruating?

Yes, it is safe for women to float while menstruating if using proper feminine hygiene products such as tampons or menstrual cups. If you are comfortable and can control your menstruation in a swimming pool, then you can do so in a float tank.

What if I get claustrophobic or want to get out?

Trust us, it really isn’t as bad as you think; the tanks are actually quite spacious. You are in complete control and can open the door and go in/out as you’d like. The tanks are also equipped with ambient lighting and speakers for music to make the experience less claustrophobic. The best way to be sure is to stop by and take a look at our float tanks!

I’m a bigger guy/gal - will I float?

Yes. Our float tanks support people up to 7 feet tall, and up to 500 lbs.

Do I wear anything in the tank?

Floating is a very personal experience. With our float tanks, you have the entire room to yourself. Most people choose to float without clothing, as wearing anything that would cling to your body will detract from the weightless experience that comes with it. Please ask our staff if you have any further questions regarding what is/is not recommended when floating.

What if I fall asleep?

It’s perfectly safe to fall asleep while floating. In fact, many people use floating for this very purpose! The water/salt solution is very dense and you will be completely buoyant. Accidentally rolling over is nearly impossible and would take a conscious effort to do so due to the high salt concentration. You do not need to know how to swim to use our float tanks.

How are the tanks kept clean?

There are 900 pounds of medical grade Epsom salt dissolved in each of our tanks. Salinity is at 1.30 grams per cubic centimetre. At this concentration, it is impossible for micro-organisms to survive in the tanks. After each session, the entire volume of the solution is filtered through a three part filtration and sterilization system, including UV light and Ozone. In addition, all clients are required to shower prior to entering the tank.

Is floating hard on my skin?

To the contrary! People have been using the therapeutic benefits of salt baths for millennia to improve the appearance and overall health of their skin. Most people report feeling silky smooth after a float, and the salt water is completely non-toxic and not harmful if swallowed (we don’t recommend drinking the water though - it tastes quite awful).

I have mobility issues; can I still use the float tanks?

People with mobility issues are welcome to use the float tanks however they must have, at minimum, 1 person to assist in entering and exiting the unit. The assistant must sign the same waiver as the customer, and must remain on-site at all times while the customer is using the float facilities.
