What is REST Therapy?
Would you be interested in lying in a dark, soundproof tank filled with less than a foot of saltwater?
Well, that’s essentially what happens in REST therapy, also known as sensory deprivation or float therapy. REST therapy may sound a bit strange, but it has actually become quite popular in recent years due to its beneficial effects on the mind and body.
Intrigued? Let’s learn more about REST therapy.
What Does REST Therapy Involve?
REST, or restricted environmental stimulation technique, therapy involves laying down in a specially designed tank. This tank, often referred to as a sensory deprivation or isolation tank, is filled with around a foot of water that has been heated to skin temperature and saturated with Epsom salt. This high salt concentration helps you float on your back more easily.
Once you’re in there and the door or lid is shut, you’re completely cut off from any outside light, sound, and even gravity. This is because you achieve a perfect state of weightlessness just floating in the water.
Ultimately, this isolation is supposed to provide your mind and body with a distraction-free relaxation experience. And yes, that’s all there is to it! It may not seem like much, but it turns out that this deeply relaxed state can have many benefits for both your physical and mental health.
What Are the Benefits of REST Therapy?
Now, it is worth noting here that each individual may have a different experience in an isolation tank, especially mentally. That deeply relaxing, almost dream-like state that you enter while inside the tank isn’t necessarily going to be the same for everyone. However, people often report a range of beneficial effects from float therapy, such as the following.
Enhanced Creativity
Feeling creatively drained? Some studies indicate that there may be an increase in participants’ creativity after spending time in a sensory deprivation tank. This could be great news for those with writer’s block or who otherwise need to keep their creative juices flowing.
More Clarity
Those who want to improve their focus and mental clarity may benefit from float therapy. Another study found that it may allow participants to think more clearly. That time in the tank allows them to slow down their thoughts and gain some insight into their own concerns and issues. This may be promising for those looking to enhance their learning and performance at school or work.
Reduced Anxiety
If you suffer from anxiety symptoms, REST therapy may be worth a try. Research shows that a single hour in an isolation tank can significantly reduce anxiety and generally improve mood in those with anxiety and stress disorders.
Faster Recovery
Float therapy may aid in both physical and mental recovery. On the physical side of things, research shows that it helps decrease blood lactate after strenuous physical activity. Mentally, a study found that REST therapy improved the psychological recovery of elite athletes after being involved in intense competition.
