Benefits of a Sensory Deprivation Tank

Want to improve your mental and physical health by doing…well…nothing?

While this may sound too good to be true, it’s essentially the idea behind sensory deprivation tanks. Also commonly referred to as floatation tanks, float tanks, or isolation tanks, sensory deprivation tanks are used for restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST). With REST therapy, you lay in a dark, soundproof tank filled with about 10 inches of salt water, and you do just what the name implies: rest.

After floating in the sensory deprivation tank for about an hour or so, you often get out feeling refreshed and recharged, ready to take on the rest of your day. However, there are several other advantages to REST therapy that you may not notice right away.

Want to learn more? Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of a sensory deprivation tank.

Relieves Anxiety and Depression

Those with anxiety often struggle to find relief from their symptoms, but they may be able to do just that in a float tank. Research shows that time in a sensory deprivation tank may reduce anxiety and improve emotional regulation in those with anxiety issues. This isn’t just in the short-term either, as participants continued to report these benefits six months later.

Interestingly, the same research found that participants with both anxiety and depression also reported relief from their depressive symptoms after time in the tank. However, unlike with anxiety, they did not report the same benefits half a year later.

Improves Sleep Quality

Having trouble sleeping at night? One review found that a number of studies have reported a link between sensory deprivation tanks and sleep quality. More specifically, participants took less time to fall asleep, had better sleep quality, and slept for longer. Considering that a good night’s sleep is important for both your physical and mental health, it may be worth spending time in a sensory deprivation tank for this benefit alone!

Improves Mental Clarity

If your mind is often busy and cluttered, then you may find some relief in a sensory deprivation tank. One study found that being cut off from outside stimulation allowed participants the chance to slow down and really reflect on their thoughts, improving mental clarity. They were then able to transfer any insight they gained into their daily lives.

Improves Athletic Performance and Recovery Time

Sensory deprivation tanks don’t only offer mental benefits. Research shows that REST therapy can improve some aspects of physical performance while also decreasing muscle soreness and physical fatigue. This means it can be great for athletes or workers who do a lot of physical labor.

Relieves Physical Pain

A sensory deprivation tank doesn’t only help those with exercise-related muscle soreness. Another study found that tank time helped decrease stress-related muscle pain. Some participants even reported relief from muscle pain they’ve had for years! If you’ve tried everything else to relieve chronic pain, then you may want to give REST therapy a try. After all, what do you have to lose?
